Stykkishólmur – historical heritage in a spectacular  setting

Stykkishólmur is located on the Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland next to the spectacular Breidarfjördur bay.  It is only a two hours drive from Reykjavík, the city capital of Iceland and has become a popular destination for tourists. This beautiful small fishing town is renowned for it´s unique small town cityscape, seafood restaurants and the beautiful natural setting surrounded by mountains and the sea. Conservation of the city´s cultural heritage and history has made the city like a living museum with all of it´s historical houses.

The environmentally friendly town

Stykkishólmur  has received honarary certificates for eco- and sustainability and along with four other municipalities on the peninsula, was the first community in Europe to get the EarthCheck environmental certification.  The town was also the first municipality in Icleand to start fully sorting it´s waste and the first town in Iceland to receive the prestigious Blue flag eco-label for its harbor.  In 2011 Stykkishólmur became a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN).
